I have no wish to dress myself up as the Stacy London (What Not to Wear) of SMS, but I do think that you’d be well advised to kick some of these SMS sins out of your Mobile Marketing closet.
#1: Don’t send messages to people who don’t want to hear from you. And always include an easy opt-out option in your message.
#2: Don’t overload your text with multiple offers. Send one, very clear message.
#3: Don’t use numbers as keywords. Keywords should be upper case text within the Call to Action. Example: “Text OFFER to 887676 to receive this week’s discount.”
#4: Steer clear of long words in your messages – the number of characters is limited, and it’s much easier to text (and receive) short, concise words and phrases.
#5: Don’t restrict your campaign to one medium. Back it up through other outreach channels in your marketing plan.
Knowing what to avoid is only half of the equation. Here are some tips for effective SMS outreach.
